Music DVD: Oasis - Definitely Maybe
17 September 2004 Oasis - Definitely Maybe (Big Brother) ****
Ten years on, Definitely Maybe stands unchallenged as the album that defined all that was good about Britpop.
It certainly makes for a compulsively watchable DVD - like the band, it is brash, blunt and bolshy - and as a collection of songs and performances Definitely Maybe is still easily the best thing Oasis have done.
You can view the album here either as a series of arty montages set to the original track listing, or as a string of contemporary live performances, again in album order, culled from various TV appearances - TOTP, The Word - and live gigs.
The live tracks prove that they were at best a middling live act, with Liam Gallagher's surly belligerence providing the only real focus as the band plodded through the songs without either charisma or any real sense of showmanship or musicianship.
But the real meat in the sandwich is the hour-long documentary which features contributions from all the main players.
Rightly or wrongly, Noel Gallagher cops all the kudos and credit for just about everything, and the impression is that he ruled the band as a benevolent dictatorship. Certainly, bass player Paul McGuigan and drummer Tony McCarroll are all but airbrushed out of the story - it would have been interesting to hear McCarroll's side of his unceremonious removal from the band.
Credit is due, and given, to Creation Records boss Alan McGee, whose faith in the band and deep pockets allowed them to scrap two versions of the album before finally nailing it at the third attempt.
But the surprise star of the show is Mani from the Stone Roses, whose garrulous contributions always raise a laugh and represent an unspoken link between the two bands - sometime during the recording of Definitely Maybe and the Roses' much delayed second album the baton of Britain's biggest and best band was passed on.

And the award for the most embarrassing acceptance speech goes to...Robbie Williams, Brit Awards, 2000
The award: Best British Single for "She's The One"
What happened: The former member of Take That challenged Liam Gallagher of Oasis to a televised fight. He goaded Gallagher - who was touring with Oasis in Japan - from the stage, offering him a £100,000 bet and shouting: "So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Would you pay to come and see it? Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my money. We'll get in the ring and have a fight and you can all watch it on TV."
The reaction: The audience talked among themselves.
Any justification? Fans defend his comments by pointing out that he was continuing a war of words sparked by Noel Gallagher who called Williams a "fat dancer from Take That". Cynics thought the posturing had more to do with sales than genuine needle.

Meg's lover jailed
By Daily Mail 21 September 2004
The millionaire fiance of Noel Gallagher's former wife Meg Mathews was jailed for nine months yesterday after pleading guilty to conspiracy to steal a car.
Christopher Flynn was on the run from police when he met Miss Mathews at a party on the Costa del Sol - and their subsequent high-profile romance put officers on his trail.
The couple dated for a year before he proposed, buying her a £30,000 ring, and planned to marry this summer. But the publicity surrounding the engagement alerted detectives. Flynn was arrested at his £350,000 Spanish villa and extradited to Britain. He was jailed at Kingston Crown Court, Surrey.
He had been further charged with five counts of handling stolen goods involving two Audis, a Ford Transit, a Volvo and more than £90,000 worth of global positioning satellite units, as well as possession of a prohibited weapon - a CS gas pen. Flynn, 32, of Ascot, Berkshire, denied these charges and they were ordered to be left on file.
Miss Mathews, 38, who had visited him in jail and attended a previous hearing, was not in court yesterday.
A source close to the fashion designer said: ' They are still
together and hoping to get married. Meg was hoping that he was not going to be jailed but she was prepared for the worst.'
Caroline Carberry, prosecuting, said police were watching a compound at Cobham, Surrey, when they spotted Flynn with accomplices Simon Rymes and Frank Sines. She said they saw Flynn making off in a car.
It returned an hour later with Flynn in the passenger seat wearing gloves and with his hair ruffled as if he had been wearing something on his head.
Police raided the compound, finding a shotgun and arresting Rymes and Sines. But Flynn escaped across a golf course.
Officers also found a balaclava, a cosh and a device to listen to police transmissions. Miss Carberry said a black bin bag with Flynn's fingerprints on it contained a mobile phone registered to him, £300 in cash and the CS gas pen.
Rymes, 30, was jailed for two years and Sines, 36, for three years for their part in the conspiracy
The court heard that Flynn had been convicted in 1994 for possessing an ecstasy tablet and cannabis.
And after being brought back to Britain from Spain he appeared at Reading Crown Court in April where he was jailed for ten months for dangerous driving and absconding.
David Whittaker, defending, said Flynn had been out of trouble for the two-and-a-half years he spent in Spain.
Miss Mathews and Oasis star Gallagher divorced in 2001 after a three-year marriage. They have a daughter. when they appeared at Kingston in February, 2002.

Oasis put back album until next May24/09/2004Fans of British rockers Oasis will have to wait another eight months for their much-anticipated new album. The group went back to the studio after a disappointing reception to new material at this summer's Glastonbury festival. Now songwriter Noel Gallagher claims they are back on schedule for a May 2005 release. He says: "We've kind of been rambling on and not working too hard on it but now we have to have it finished by May 26. "It's been meandering for a bit because we've not had a date to work to because we're extremely successful. So they just say 'Alright, finish when you finish' - but we have a release date now." Noel also revealed his brother Liam had contributed some songs, adding: "He's written a few. We've demoed 66 songs and he's written a fair few."

Oasis Reveal New Album Release DatePosted by stereoboard on September 23, 2004
Noel Gallagher has revealed the release date of the new Oasis album.Noel revealed, during a TV interview, that the band has set themselves a deadline to release their long-overdue follow-up to 'Heathern Chemistry'. Noel told Sky One: "May 26. We've got a release date now, which is why it's been meandering for a bit because we've not had a date to work to because we're extremely successful. "So they just say: "Alright, finish when you finish" - but it's kind of been rambling on and not working too hard on it but now we have to have it finished by May 26." Oasis scrapped sessions intended for the follow-up to Heathen Chemistry, which included a period recording with Death In Vegas. Noel recently revealed that Oasis have written 66 songs for the new album and that brother Liam has written most of them. But he said: "Some of them are really good but he's going to have to do a solo tour 'cause I'm not doing a triple album."

Noel Gallagher blasts Liam's tunes25/09/2004Noel Gallagher is refusing to allow any of his brother Liam's songs to appear on the next Oasis album. Earlier this summer, the group scrapped some tracks following a disappointing performance at Britain's Glastonbury Music Festival, and now Noel is taking extra care over the disc. He says: "Liam's written quite a lot, it's a pity they are not going to make it. Some of them are really good, but he's going to have to do a solo tour because I'm not doing a triple album."

Noel Gallagher looks back fondly on debut album from Oasis; now on DVD Megan Leach Canadian Press
September 23, 2004Noel (left) and Liam Gallagher from the band Oasis. (CP Archive/Sony Music Canada/HO/Paul Slattery)TORONTO (CP) - It seems hard to believe that it has been a decade since Oasis arrived on the music scene, waking up the 1990s with strong, guitar-based rock and roll and sweet, Britpop melodies. Looking back at their debut album Definitely Maybe, Oasis lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher gets a positive vibe from the band's creation. "I think it stands up," said Gallagher during a telephone interview from London. "Other people seem to think that it sounds as good in 2004 as it did in '94, and you know what? Who am I to argue about that?" Oasis landed on the radar of music listeners in 1994 after being signed to Britain's Creation Records. The Manchester band featured Gallagher on lead guitar and backing vocals, his younger brother Liam provided the trademark Oasis vocals, while guitarist Paul (Bonehead) Arthurs, bassist Paul McGuigan and drummer Tony McCaroll rounded out the lineup. Oasis had a signature sound based on prominent musical influences from very different time periods. "It was a cross between three bands. It was the Sex Pistols, the Beatles and the Stone Roses," said Gallagher, now 37. "I think if you were to listen to a song by each of those bands, you'd probably think 'Yeah, it kind of sounds like Oasis."' Definitely Maybe entered the British record charts at No. 1 and became the fastest-selling debut in British music history. Songs like Supsersonic, Shakermaker and Live Forever would go on to help define the sound of the mid-'90s on both sides of the Atlantic. A comprehensive DVD version of Definitely Maybe was released earlier this month. "I was heavily involved with all the aspects after the idea was put to me," said Gallagher of the record company's decision to issue the DVD with input from the band. Contained on the DVD are crisp, vibrant audio tracks of the entire album, plus live concert footage of every song, promotional videos for most tracks and a detailed documentary featuring the original members of Oasis recounting the recording process of the CD. "Because it was such a landmark British album, there's lots and lots of people who, when they hear those songs, they just transport back in time," said Gallagher. "We thought it was best if we were to properly tell the story of how that album came about." The documentary feature follows the format of the album song by song, with the occasional sidetrack for anecdotes about songwriting, touring and life in the rock and roll landscape. "I think the original draft of the documentary itself was a good two and a half hours long," said Gallagher. "With the album only being about 50 minutes it was decided the documentary shouldn't really be twice the length of the album." Asked about what he's most proud of on the album, Gallagher doesn't stop with just one song. He cites Supersonic for its one take recording as a demo, Live Forever for its massive appeal and Slide Away for being written almost by accident in the studio.

"It's one of the best songs on there," said Gallagher of the latter track. He also lists Rock 'n' Roll Star as a standout "because it pretty much said everything in a song that I've ever wanted to say."
Gallagher is more modest about Oasis's impact on music history than he has been in the past. "I haven't even listened to it lately to get nostalgic or anything like that. I'm busy working on another one," he said of Definitely Maybe and the band's current project. "I only wrote it, what do I know?"
He anticipates a new Oasis album will arrive in stores next year.
"It's going really well. This is our third attempt," Gallagher said of the recording process. "The songs that are going to be on the album basically haven't changed. But it's just that the overall sonic quality of the two versions that we've done of it weren't quite right."
That passionate hunt for just the right sound also plagued the recording process of Definitely Maybe, which similarly underwent three rounds of recording and remixing before the finished product was achieved. The parallels aren't lost on Gallagher.
"It's quite spooky actually because it's following the same pattern," he said, with a good natured laugh. "So hopefully all the omens point to the same kind of impact, but who knows?"
Gallagher said Oasis is looking at touring plans in the future.
"The only way one can make a living is to do gigs," he said, referring to the current economic state of the music industry. "People can't download a gig yet, so at least we've got that," he joked.
But don't get him wrong. Gallagher has the heart and soul of a pure rock and roller.
"Rock and roll's not about money, is it?" he said. "It's about getting up, doing what you want, turn yourself on, going to bed at night thinking well, it was a great day, I hope I wake up in the morning."
For Gallagher, the secret to success in music is simple.
"If people dig it live, then they clap," he said. "If they don't clap, then they don't dig it. There you go."

Oasis Enlist The Help Of The Starkey Family by Lowri Williams on 9/29/2004Oasis - Possible guest drummer not picturedNoel Gallagher is pretty desperate to get this new album Oasis have been working on for quite some time. Talking to XFM the Oasis main man has been discussing the new album and the bands plans to get back in the road as soon as possible. The band are due to travel to Los Angeles to complete work on the album where Zak Starkey is to take up the drum sticks after the departure of drummer Alan White. And they may be more then one Starkey participating in the project. “Zak will drum on the bulk of it,” Noel explained, “And we’re gonna try - while we’re out there - to get his Dad down the studio cos he lives in LA. So we’re gonna try and get him on cos we’ve got this one song which is quite… well, fucking funnily enough, it sounds like The Beatles, and we’re gonna try and get him and his Dad on the same track. Then again Ringo might just tell us to fuck off.”
“To be honest,” he continued, “We spent that much money fucking pissing about on the new album we’ll be touring it for the next four years. So by the time this next album cycle comes around everyone will be sick to fucking death of Oasis. We’ll have to play London fifteen times I’d have thought, but we'll have to start doing gigs sharpish.” Both Gallagher brothers have contributed material to the new untitled album. “He (Liam) has been writing tonnes. He’s probably writing as we fucking speak. He’s written loads and loads and loads. He’s doing okay at the writing, he’s got a few belters. His songs are really coming on. Considering he can’t play a fucking note on the guitar he’s doing alright.”
Watch this space for album and UK tour details.

Gallagher sings to mugging victim28/09/2004Rocker Liam Gallagher was devastated to hear an Oasis fan had been mugged - so cheered her up with a private singing performance over the phone. The Wonderwall singer attended a wedding last week and was shocked when a guest told him one of his admirers had been attacked, so immediately asked for her number so he could sing her his chart-topping hit Champagne Supernova reports Britain's News of the World newspaper. A shocked witness says: "It was really sweet. Imagine getting a private performance from Liam down your phone. I bet that cheered her up."

Noel Reveals Oasis Album DeadlineNoel Gallagher has admitted that without a deadline to work to Oasis weren’t making any progress with their new album. However, the band have now set a date by which the album must be released. Speaking to Tim Lovejoy last night (September 22), Noel explained that the band have set themselves a deadline to release the long-overdue album. "May 26,” Gallagher said. “We’ve got a release date now, which is why it’s been meandering for a bit because we’ve not had a date to work to because we’re extremely successful. So they just say ‘Alright, finish when you finish’ - but it’s kind of been rambling on and not working too hard on it but now we have to have it finished by May 26." Noel also spoke about his brother Liam’s ever-growing songwriting prowess. "He’s written a few. It’s a pity they’re not going to make it onto the album. We’ve demoed 66 songs and he’s written a fair few. Some of them are really good but he’s going to have to do a solo tour ‘cause I’m not doing a triple album." Noel Gallagher and Ian Brown will be joining Sarah Darling on Music: Response today (September 23) from 7pm for a performance of Brown’s new single ‘Keep What Ya Got’ .
