Calling on The Clash
Like many musicians inspired by Brit punk legends The Clash, Mike Grimes was touched by the all-star tribute to late Clash guitarist Joe Strummer at the 2003 Grammy Awards.
''I thought it was very powerful,'' Grimes says of the rendition of London Calling that saw Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven Van Zandt, Elvis Costello and Dave Grohl trading verses on the seminal song. ''It was a great testament to paying respects to somebody who contributed as much to music as anybody.''
Grimes' record store, Grimey's, gets a jump on celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Clash's most famous album — thanks to Sony Legacy's upcoming reissue of London Calling. Tonight, The Basement will play host to a listening/viewing party celebrating the three-disc set's release, which features the remastered double album, a second CD with 21 previously unreleased demo tracks (highly bootlegged as the ''Vanilla Tapes'') and a DVD with a 35-minute documentary on the album's creation.
After rolling through the various recorded works, Grimes and friends will take the stage for an hour or so of Clash covers before offering the reissue package for sale at midnight. The London Calling 25th anniversary party starts at 8 p.m. at The Basement and is free, giving Nashville's music community one more chance to bring on the rock before the singer-songwriters of the Americana Music Association take over the city later this week.
