Nancy Spungen was born prematurely weighing only six pounds in February 1958 in Philadelphia. As a young child she had a sleeping problem the cure for which would in later life lead to her drug dependency. After months of sleeplessness Nancy mother sought medical help. Her doctor prescribed phenobarbital administered orally every four hours it provide Nancy parents a respite from their sleepless nights but may well have started Nancy on her own private road to drug dependency. At school she made exceptional progress so much so that she skipped third - grade going straight to fourth-grade. While achieving good grades at school socially she was backward. Fat and ungainly she found making friends difficult and at this age she displayed aggressive violent tendencies. At the age of ten a psychiatric report noted that she found normal relations to emotionally sterile or discordant.
For Nancy emotions had no spectrum there was anger or nothing. In 69 during a visit to another psychologist Nancy trashed the womans office. A later psychological examination concluded that her emotional and behavioural disorders were the result of schizophrenia. After assaulting her mother with a claw hammer she was prescribed Thorazine. By thirteen this emotional wreak was smoking weed popping acid and screwing the boys. The drugs she bought were paid for by money stolen from her parents.
When once she feared that she was pregnant she performed her own abortion with the aid of a coat hanger. At sixteen she enrolled at the University of Colorado. University was not a success within months she arrested and charge with theft and drug possession. Her parents advised her to try another collage. Her reply was in hindsight horrifically accurate
" I'm gonna die before I'm twenty one. I'm gonna go out in a blaze of glory. Like...like headlines"
Death and Celebrity
Nancy interest in music had started early as a child she liked the big rock bands the Doors, Cream, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Now at a young but certainly not tender seventeen, she was spending more time in New York where the music scene was buzzing. Using more and harder drugs she became something of a groupie. Even bragging to her sister that she'd "done whole bands". In December 75 Nancy moved to New York city with the support of her parents, she took a flat on West 23rd Street in Manhattan's Chelsea district and joined the city’s Methadone programme. The trouble with Methadone programmes is that they want you to give it up, and for Nancy this wasn't an option. Her habit grew to £100 dollars a day. Begging from parents and dancing in bars payed for her smack.
" She and my friend were topless dancers. Nancy was working in a kind of brothel in an upper East Side town house. She used to beat on bankers" Richard Hell "She was a fairly typical suburban girl who worshipped rock stars. She had exceptionally large drive to be where the action was. Nancy just wanted to be somebody ( anybody). And you"ve got to hand it to her. She made it."

Throughout 76 Nancy hung out in the New York punk scene. Back in the UK Punk Rock had launched itself into the big time, and Nancy wanted again to be where the action was. She told her parents
"The whole thing is there. It's like everybody from here is there now. That's where it's all happening. Everybodys there!" Weaning herself off heroin she departed for the U.K. in March of 77.
