Early in 1977 Sid met Nancy Spungen during a party at Linda Ashby's house. This American girl shared his taste in everything. According to John Lydon he even introduced them.
" I even got him the girlfriend who ruined him. It's terrible."

Deborah Spungen on seeing Sid for the first time said.
"With his drooping eye and malevolent expression he had to be the creepiest looking young man of the face of the earth."

Of their relationship though she said
" Nancy was genuinely happy, possibly the only time she had been in her entire life."
While Sid's mother Ann Beverley said.
" Simon was never a very loving sort of person. He didn't reveal himself to many people, and he could be very cold, but he loved Nancy very dearly. He loved her with all his heart, and that had to be very big to take what he did from her."
The main thing Sid seemed to have taken from Nancy was an addiction to hard drugs. In March of 1977 he was hospitalised with hepatitis caught from using dirty shared needles. After his release from hospital they stayed with Sid's mum before moving to a flat in Chelsea. With out doubt Nancy brought out the worst in Sid. The drugs and drink fuelled their tempestuous relationship. Highs followed by the inevitable withdrawals made the company of either fairly unbearable. Others around Sid could see the negative affect Nancy was having on him. At one point there was a concerted effort to get rid of her. A plane ticket back to New York was purchased. One afternoon while Sid was somewhere else, there was a serious attempt to get Nancy into the back of a cab and on to Heathrow. Unfortunately for Sid this kidnapping never worked somehow Nancy cottoned on to the whole scam and legged it off into the crowds. In the end the only way the band could work with Sid was to ban Nancy. Without Nancy and without drugs Sid was fine. Of course sooner or later Nancy would reappear.
" I remember Sid telling me a story. He thought it was great. Ha ha ha for decadence. They were so broke, they were looking out of their window, which overlooked a garage. There was a black mechanic working down there, and Nancy went down and gave him a blow job for £15. Sid thought that was marvellous because he got to watch. What a couple."

No matter what others say Sid totally believed and depended on Nancy. So much so that he allowed her to manage him and in august 78 they returned to New York and for a few days stayed with Nancy parents. On Sunday 27th Nancy decided it was time to go and in a parting conversation with her mother said.
"I'm going to die very soon. Before my 21st birthday. I won't live to be 21. I'm never going to be old. I don't ever want to be ugly and old. I'm and old lady now anyhow. I'm 80. There's nothing left. I've already lived a whole lifetime. I'm going out. In a blaze of glory."
That night they booked into New Yorks Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd Street.
