Concert Preview: The Queers @ R'n'R Hotel
January 19, 2007
Along with ripped jeans and an appetite for destruction, a roguish stage name is a prerequisite for membership in a punk band. There’s Iggy Pop, Sid Vicious, and the frontmen for the four acts playing at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Sunday: Andy Vandal from The Riptides, not to be confused with Conley Chlamydia of The RipOuts. Then there’s Haircut (of The Heart Attacks), and Joe Queer (of The Queers).
Since 1982, The Queers have had 18 different line-ups and almost as many albums. Out of the rotating cast of characters, only Joe Queer has been a constant presence. From their very first song, “We’d have a Riot Doing Heroin” to 2006’s live album Weekend at Bernies, Joe and the gang have been true to the spirit of punk, eschewing musical craftsmanship for devil-may-care attitudes and the joy of making noise.
The three junior squads of punks sharing the bill with The Queers on Sunday must feel kind of like Katie Holmes, who, after salivating over Tom Cruise in the ‘80s, now gets to swap saliva with him. Sorry, we didn’t mean to gross you out. Perhaps a better comparison would be to Lukas Rossi, the winner of that reality show Rockstar: Supernova, who went from being an unknown musician to fronting a band made up of his heroes: Tommy Lee, Metallica’s Jason Newsted, and Gilby Clarke, formerly of Guns N’ Roses. If you’re looking to get your mosh on and witness two generations of punks playing alongside each other, the Rock and Roll Hotel is the place to be.
