Ping Pong Bitches
Roc Ya Body (Umami)UK release date: 18 September 2006Having escaped from the clutches of Poptones, the Bitches have now signed to Mark Moore's Umami Records. Famous for their unapologetic, "couldn't give a monkey's" attitude you can see why they already have a collaboration with the Prodigy under their belts. Citing influences as diverse as the Sex Pistols, Joan Jett and Serge Gainsbourg you can see where their particular brand of subtle smutty boisterousness comes from. The song itself was inspired by the vocalist's lustings for a beautiful teenage boy she once met on a coach. Presumably he spent the whole trip wearing an expression not dissimilar to that of a rabbit caught in headlights. The record is an angular piece with the jerky edge you'd expect from the electro puck genre, overlaid with the band's trademark breathy and seductive vocals and underscored with whirs and clicks and the occasional pseudo-orgasm noise. It's enjoyable enough but destined for obscurity, as there's a lot of this around at the moment. The problem is that with all the PR noise about riot-inciting gigs, hard drinking alongside bad-ass rap and raucous rock'n'roll, you're expecting so much more than you get. - Mike Barnes
