TIME FOR HEROES TO REUNITE?That's what we like to seeEstranged LIBERTINE PETE DOHERTY has revealed his plans to record a Christmas single with former bandmate CARL BARAT. The guitarist has said that he hopes the troubles between the pair can be buried and perhaps heal the rift with the group. Doherty said: “Oh yes, I’m going to collaborate with Carl Barât. No I’m not (joking). I’m going to. Even if I have to kidnap him.”
He added: “We’re going to do a Christmas record. We always said we’d do a Christmas record. What better way to highlight the goodwill and forgiveness of man, than with a reunion?”
However, Doherty did also say that he has still had no contact with the band since his failed attempts at rehab to treat his drug addiction. “You’re joking aren’t you?” he told Xfm. “I haven’t spoken to anyone since the day I went to Thailand (to the Thamkrabok Monastery in June). No, not at all. You know what I mean? I try but there’s only so much I can take.”
Speaking about Babyshambles, who release their new single 'Killamangiro' on November 29, Doherty revealed that the band have been working hard in the studio on new material. We went inside Odessa studios in Clapton [October 12] and we worked about 20 hours solid in there, just getting new ideas down,” he said. “The idea was to get some new songs down but we just ended up running through brand new things. So hopefully before the end of the month we’ll have the foundations of a great album.”
The band are also expected to head out on a “little Northern tour” around the release of 'Killamangiro'. As previously reported on NME.COM, Babyshambles play tonight (October 15) as part of a Love Music Hate Racism gig with The Cooper Temple Clause at London’s The Coronet. “Hopefully people will understand that it’s something very important to me,” Doherty explained, “And all the people that are involved in it, and are part of it together, who are trying to get the message across, I respect what they’ve done in the past – doing events, campaigns, keeping racism out of football, and I just feel it’s a positive thing, a very positive thing to be involved in. It’s quite simple, I am an anti-fascist. They might me old-fashioned ‘leftie’ ideals, but I’ll do my bit.”
Babyshambles are on the cover of this week’s NME, which is out now.

Dot Dotes on Doherty by Scott Colothan on 10/22/2004Dot Allison has posted a series of messages on the Babyshambles website saying that working with Pete Doherty has inspired her to write some of the best songs she’s ever penned. Clearly these thoughts were keeping Ms Allison awake - the messages appeared online just after three o’clock this morning. In a stirring and frankly emotional statement, Allison wrote: "The tracks we wrote the recent days ago like invisible silk binding us forever and to all glad and sorry memories in and around the melodies. The voice in our eyes, deeper than words.”
She added: "Although I have been song-writing myself and often cross-pollinating with other musicians for over a decade now, I do feel at peace working with Pete more than I have done among other folk. Beautiful and rare a chemistry we may capture in our air or with a pick and a lyre.”
Allison was formerly a member the band ‘One Dove’, and has had a history of collaborating with prominent artists, such as Death in Vegas, Mercury Rev, Kevin Shields, Andrew Weatherall and Hal David. She has been working with Pete and Babyshambles for the last few months. Some sections of the media have speculated that they have started a relationship.

ART ATTACK!You can't take him anywhere...PETE DOHERTY has been banned from LONDON's trendy GROUCHO CLUB after reportedly wrecking a piece of modern artwork thought to be worth around £100,000. The former Libertines star was performing a charity gig with his band Babyshambles on Saturday (October 23) when he tore the metal sculpture from the ceiling and it disintegrated on the floor. An onlooker told today's (October 25) Sun newspaper: "It's not a big room but Babyshambles launched into a very lively set. Pete was spinning round all over the place. "Then he jumped into the crowd and grabbed the sculpture - it fell to the floor in pieces." The club's bosses are reportedly furious over the incident and a source told The Sun: "Staff made it clear they never want to see him in their club again." A spokesperson for the Groucho Club refused to comment on the incident.

Pete has an art attack during crazy club gigWild singer ... Pete Picture: REX PETE DOHERTY has been banned from London’s snobby celebrity hang-out the Groucho Club after wrecking a modern artwork worth £100,000. The ex-LIBERTINES singer tore the metal sculpture from the ceiling and it disintegrated on the floor. Pete was performing a charity gig in the restaurant on Saturday with his other band BABYSHAMBLES. And the wild singer refused to tone down his performance to suit the plush surroundings. After whipping himself up into a frenzy Pete leapt off the small stage into the crowd that included actor JAMIE THEAKSTON and a gang of up-and-coming comedians. Pete then jumped up and grabbed what he thought was a cheap decoration and it came clattering to the ground. An onlooker told me: “It’s not a big room but Babyshambles launched into a very lively set. “Pete was spinning around all over the place. “Then he jumped into the crowd and grabbed this sculpture — it fell to the floor in pieces.” Grouchy Groucho bosses were furious. The source added: “Pete scarpered straight after the show. “Staff made it clear they never want to see him in their club again.” When I spoke to Pete’s people last night they confirmed what had happened — and they told me that he hasn’t been approached to pay for the damage ... yet.

Babyshambles Run Riot In GrouchoDuring a performance by Pete Doherty’s infamously unpredictable outfit Babyshambles at a charity fundraiser at London’s exclusive members club The Groucho, Doherty managed to do some very serious damage. The band had been booked to perform at the London member's only club’s ‘Gangshow’ night, where members from the media organise a night of performances to raise money for charity. This year’s event, hosted by comedian Steve Furst from 'Little Britain', also included performances by Suggs, ‘Four Poofs & A Piano’ from The Jonathon Ross Show and (bad idea number one) former Libertines singer Pete Doherty’s new outfit Babyshambles. According to reports, the band swamped the club with hangers on and a large entourage, including Wolfman - Doherty’s musical collaborator on the recent ‘For Lovers’ single. The stage was set up in the club's restaurant, decorated with numerous pieces of art, many by acclaimed Brit Art artists such as Damien Hirst and Gavin Turk (bad idea number two). Unsurprisingly, the band arrived late, but after only three chaotic songs Doherty grabbed a huge metal sculpture hanging off the ceiling, dragging it to the floor and destroying it in the process, before fleeing the scene. Although the club’s owners are rumoured to have orginally paid £60,000 for the sculpture, although estimates put its current value at more like £100,000. An onlooker is quoted by The Sun as saying, "It's not a big room but Babyshambles launched into a very lively set. Pete was spinning around all over the place. Then he jumped into the crowd and grabbed this sculpture - it fell to the floor in pieces." "Pete left straight after the show. Staff made it clear they never want to see him in their club again." Babyshambles new single ‘Killamangiro’ is released through Rough Trade Records on Monday November 8. Working on the approximate amount of cash as band like Babyshambles would receive for each single sold, they would have to sell approximately 181,000 copies to pay to replace the sculpture.

Doherty loses his passport
20/11/2004
Former Libertines star Pete Doherty's passport has been confiscated by a London store, after he failed to pay for a pair of curtains.
The singer - who is touring with side band Babyshambles after being forced out of The Libertines because of his drug addictions - tried to buy the curtains for his tourbus, at east London shop Rockit on Wednesday.
When he found himself short of cash by $36 (£20) staff agreed to accept his passport as a temporary deposit - but the rocker never returned.
A store source says: "At the end of the day, the till was still short. So Anna, who works here, put in £20 of her own money and took the passport."

CURTAINS FOR POOR PETE
WHEN a pair of curtains caught the eye of troubled rocker Pete Doherty there was one small snag ... he didn't have the cash to buy them.
Not wanting to miss out on a bargain the former Libertines frontman hit on a novel solution - he swapped them for his passport. As you do.
Doherty, 25, admits blowing thousands of pounds on drugs so its not surprising he's strapped for cash.
He spotted the curtains while shopping at fashionable Rockit on Brick Lane, East London, and, according to a shop assistant, originally asked for a discount.
But the source told Virgin Mobile's news service: "We do sometimes give discounts to famous people, but we said no to Pete.
"I couldn't believe it when he offered us his passport because he didn't have enough money. It's not something we've ever been offered before.
"Pete seemed really embarrassed, but he had his heart set on the curtains."
The singer is about to tour Ireland with new band Babyshambles and wanted to deck out their tour bus with the drapes.
"The passport was actually out of date," said the source. "We accepted it because we thought we could sell it as a piece of memorabilia. Then we changed our minds and decided to keep it - it's a nice memento."

He's been jailed, sacked by his band and he's a junkie. How cool is that?By Adam Sherwin, Media Reporter King of 'cool': The choice of Peter Doherty as an icon has been criticised because of his drug use. (BEN GURR)THE music industry was accused yesterday of glamorising drug abuse after the New Musical Express chose an artist who is fighting crack cocaine and heroin addiction as its “Cool Icon” of 2004. Pete Doherty, who was kicked out of The Libertines for failing to control his drug use, topped the magazine’s writers’ list of music stars who embody the notion of “cool”. Drug charities said that the magazine, the most influential music publication read by teenagers, was behaving irresponsibly. The NME said that it had rewarded Doherty for his wit, musical abilities and positive influence on his young fans, not for his well- documented drug problems. The Libertines topped the album charts in September and the Indie rock band are hailed as a classic English group in the tradition of The Clash, The Smiths and The Kinks. Last year Doherty served a two-month prison sentence for breaking into the flat of Carl Barat, The Libertines’ co- founder, to steal possessions to sell for drugs. After a six-month reunion, Barat ejected Doherty from the group as he failed to combat his addictions. Doherty walked out of rehabilitation at a Thai monastery and friends say that he still uses heroin. Doherty, who received a four-month suspended custodial sentence after pleading guilty to possession of a knife, is now pursuing a solo career. His unpredictable behaviour has enthralled the NME and thousands of young fans flock to his shows, although his appearances are erratic. The NME voted Barat and Doherty joint-top of the Cool list. The magazine said: “With a loyal fan base that copies their every move, they (Barat and Doherty) are indisputable kings of cool.” Alex Needham, deputy editor of the NME, said: “It is not a heroin addiction which makes Pete Doherty the coolest. “He is a very talented musician who has become a modern-day minstrel, wandering the country playing for anyone who wants to see him. There is something seductive about the idea of doomed destructive youth, which goes back to the Romantic poets. “There is a parallel with Kurt Cobain, but the NME does not endorse drug abuse. Readers can see that it has caused the disintegration of a great band like The Libertines.” Rebecca Cheshire, policy manager at the drugs charity Addaction, said: “Young people are vulnerable to hard drugs and not everyone has the ability to fall back on expensive rehabilitation programmes like rock stars. The record industry does have a responsibility to promote healthy lifestyles.” She said that consumption of crack cocaine and heroin usage is rising among young people, fuelled by cheap street prices. Harry Shapiro, director of the Drugscope charity, said that young people could decide for themselves. “Fans can see when someone is messing up through herion and crack,” he said. “I haven’t seen evidence that they are influenced to take drugs because of a rock star.” The Libertines, who continued without Doherty, will split next month after touring. Barat said that he would reform the group with Doherty in “full health”. Doherty is expected to hit the Top Ten next month with the single Killamangiro, under the name Babyshambles. THE COOL LIST 1 Pete Doherty (ex-Libertines) and Carl Barat (The Libertines) 2 Mike Skinner (The Streets) 3 Eminem 4 Johnny Borrell (Razorlight) 5 Nick McCarthy (Franz Ferdinand) 6 Morrissey 7 Kelle Okereke (Bloc Party) 8 Martin Tomlinson (Selfish C***) 9 Brandon Flowers (The Killers) 10 Ana Matronic (Scissor Sisters) 11 Dominic Masters (The Others) 12 The Maggot (Goldie Lookin’ Chain) 13 Andre 3000 (OutKast) 14 Kim Deal (Pixies) 15 Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio) 16 Carlos D (Interpol) 17 Devendra Banhart (solo artist) 18 Meg White (The White Stripes) 19 Gwen Stefani 20 Serge Pizzio (Kasabian)

'Cool' Doherty angers drug groupDoherty left The Libertines following high-profile drug problemsA drugs charity has accused magazine NME of behaving irresponsibly by naming singer Pete Doherty, who has battled drug addiction, its Cool Icon of 2004. The NME says Doherty, who sang in rock band The Libertines, and ex-bandmate Carl Barat embody "the notion of cool". Drugs charity Addaction feared this would influence readers, saying: "Young people are vulnerable to hard drugs." But the magazine's assistant editor Malik Meer said it was Doherty's talent which earned him the title. Jail sentence The Libertines topped the UK chart in September with their second, self-titled, album on which Doherty played. On the week of its release Doherty received a suspended four month jail sentence after admitting possession of a flick knife. In 2003 he served two months in jail after being found guilty of burglary at ex-bandmate Carl Barat's home. Doherty now has his own band, Babyshambles. Addaction said the consumption of crack cocaine and heroin is rising among young people, fuelled by cheap street prices. "The record industry does have a responsibility to promote healthy lifestyles," policy manager Rebecca Cheshire told The Times newspaper. "Not everyone has the ability to fall back on expensive rehabilitation programmes like rock stars." But the NME's Malik Meer was not convinced that fans of Doherty would be inspired to take drugs. Doherty (right) was jailed for a burglary at Barat's home (left)"It has not been proved that rock stars who take drugs or embark upon antisocial behaviour influence their fans to do the same," he said. "We are rewarding Pete Doherty's creativity and skill, not the fact that he has taken drugs. He writes great music and is a great rock 'n' roll star." Meer said The Streets' Mike Skinner, ranked in second place in the NME Cool List, is also respected for his music rather than the drug-taking he details in his songs. "While this list was compiled by staff, we are confident that it reflects the taste of our readers."

Pete Doherty in TOTP Scuffle by Scott Colothan on 12/14/2004Pete Doherty was kicked out of Top of The Pops last week after allegedly fighting with a member of the audience. The Babyshambles front man was set to perform the top ten smash Killamangiro with the band when he got involved in an argument, reports The Sun. After rehearsals an audience member Oli Rees-Horsley is thought to have asked Doherty, who has notoriously been battling with drug addiction, “How much crack have you had?” Angered by this, Doherty reportedly dived off the stage and wrestled the man to the ground. Top of The Pops producers were forced to use rehearsal footage when the show was transmitted on Friday night instead of a proper performance. Oli told the Sun: “All I remember is Pete coming for me like a whirlwind and the two of us grappling on the floor”. Babyshambles continues their UK tour with a show at Glasgow Barrowlands tonight (December 14). The tour concludes with dates at Blackpool Empress Ballroom (15) and Sheffield Leadmill (16). DOHERTY THROWN OFF MUSIC SHOW Former LIBERTINES rocker PETE DOHERTY was thrown off the set of British music TV show TOP OF THE POPS last week (ends10DEC04) after he started fighting with an audience member. The English singer, who was fired from the Libertines in May (04) after failing to conquer his drug demons, was performing on the BBC show with his new band BABYSHAMBLES. During rehearsals, cheeky fan OLI REES-HORSLEY shouted, "How much crack have you had?" Disgusted Doherty jumped off the stage and started hitting Rees-Horsley, before the pair were separated by security guards. TOTP producer ANDI PETERS asked Doherty and Babyshambles to leave the studio, and let Rees-Horsley remain to watch the other acts. Rees-Horsley says, "Andi told me Pete was waiting outside to have another go. All I remember is Pete coming for me like a whirlwind and the two of us grappling on the floor."
